My first official blog entry and I'm going to tell you about breast health. When I went to the gynecologist for my yearly she said that women over 40 need to get official x-ray breast exams every two years. Women over 50 need to get them done once a year. I thought okay great here we go, she's going to tell me to get this done as well as going to the gynecologist every year now.
By the way I'm not 50 yet.
Now there are about a hundred things I can think of off the top of my head that I would rather do than get a breast exam done--like cleaning the entire house from top to bottom sounds better than this. In the hour I had to wait to get this exciting event completed, I read an entire Reader's Digest, made several phone calls, and had plenty of time to think.
I wasn't even nervous. I figured I'd already been through enough in my life, this would be easy. I realized that it was so easy to get done that I will get it done every two years like my doctor said. The room was set up just for women--all pink and purple(my favorite colors), and a woman could change right there in this huge room--alone.
Gone were those horrid little changing rooms where I had to change and wait for seemingly days on end for someone to come get me. One time when I waited for my first breast x-ray exam a man came to get me, to take me to this huge sterile looking white walled room--all this while I'm wearing a hospital gown that I had to wear with the back facing the front-- with no bra on, but with pants on and carrying my purse containing everything I needed in it for my one year old.
This time around the experience was so much nicer. Somebody along the way must have figured out that women don't like being walked down the hall with their breasts hanging out---unless maybe you're a supermodel and you're getting paid tons of money. When I left, I realized that I'm so happy to live in America where we women can get this done, in a short amount of time to ensure that we stay healthy. I thought it's a lot easier than the other alternative--never getting it done and possibly dying young.
So women go to your gynecologist once a year. I wasn't because my husband's insurance kept changing. When the doctor tells you to get a mammography done---get it done. We have to take care of ourselves, because we are the ones that take care of our families. It doesn't take long, it hurts a little, your pride may get stung a little, but we're worth it. When I was actually getting it done, I thought I'm doing this for my family. I also thought , if a model can stand there in her undies or topless in front of a lot of people than I can do this.
