A Facebook friend of mine had a recent article on Yahoo News concerning what people over 50 should never wear. Even with 50 being the new 40, there are tops, dresses, shoes, bathing suits older women should never wear.
Used to be there were rules about what clothing people should wear, and what they shouldn't wear, such as you shouldn't wear white after Labor Day, and you weren't supposed to wear black to a wedding.
Well, guess what all of those rules have been thrown to the wind.
But, I couldn't help myself after seeing so many women over the age of 50 lately dressing like they are trying desperately to look like they are 25 again. Give it up, already! Dress your age. If you have a great body and look great in nearly everything, then I say go for it! But, please if you do not have the body of a 25 year old, ladies, please do not dress like one.
Here are the items a woman 50 years of age and over should, oh please, not wear:
1. Halter tops. Especially without a bra----can you say sagging nightmare, gross, vile, disgusting, If you have to wear a halter top women over 50, please wear a bra.
2.Bikini bathing suit. When you have had several children, have stretch marks, and you also have fat situated around your mid-section, please do not wear a bikini. It doesn't matter what age you are, bikinis do not look good on an overweight, older woman. Besides, all of the people going "Yuck", as you wander by, noone wants to see anyone's fat.
3.Short shorts. Okay, short shorts look great, usually on young girls, not on older women who have sagging thighs and butts. It looks gross to expose older skin to the world that has cellulite, fat, and is sagging. Besides, when clothing is sold in the Juniors department, there's usually a really good reason for this.
4.Super short dresses with Ho heels. Nothing says, "Gag me with a spoon" than an older woman walking through a room especially when her younger daughter has gotten married, and here comes the bride's mom strutting through the reception wearing a super short dress, wearing seriously high heels, thinking she looks HOT. Please, let younger women be stared at, not you for all the wrong reasons.
5. See through tops. This is not for an older woman who has fat centered around her waist, or when she has sagging breasts. Ladies, this is a huge no-no! Please do not wear a see-through shirt, top, crop-top, or camisole in a public place, even if it is 105 degrees outside. Leave see-through garments to turn on your guy at home.
6.Sleeveless tops are not what a woman should wear when her arms are saying "Hello", when she waves in a crowded room. Please, ladies do not wear, sleeveless garments, unless you plan on leaving your arms at your sides for the evening.
7. Thong panties or thong bathing suits. Please do not wear this garment, girls with a super short skirt,or dress. Thong panties were made for the younger set, when paired with low rider jeans.
8. No panties. Please, ladies do not commit a Paris Hilton mistake by not wearing any panties. This may make headlines for an heiress, but you may make headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Women over 50 need to look beautiful, becoming mentors for younger women who hopefully will look up to older women that look great. By the way, ladies remember to work out, and take care of the body you live in. LOL this tongue in cheek post gave me my first laugh of the day. Everything is so true. I must say though, the no panties thing gave me cold chills.
Well done KT1, I'm looking forward to more of your observations.
KT1, I agree with every word you said.
And if I may I'd like to add an opinion about older women: HAIR! When a woman is old enough that age lines begin to streak down the side of her mouth, she should NOT wear long hair. Long hair actually accents those lines and makes the woman look even older.
"The surface, the superficial, the way one looks has become valued too highly in our society. When the skin begins to sag, many women go for Botox. Why on earth would you let somebody stick a needle in your face just to get rid of a wrinkle? Here's the real question: What do we have to do to place more value on age? We have to value ourselves not for what we look like or the things we possess but for the women we are. The most important thing I can tell you about aging is this: If you really feel that you want to have an off-the-shoulder blouse and some big beads and thong sandals and a dirndl skirt and a magnolia in your hair, do it. Even if you're wrinkled."

Wow this is one of the most insulting things I have ever read. How about concentrating on, at age 50, who you've become and the accomplishments you have acheived instead of things contributing to your outward appearance? No wonder why teenage girls have such horrendous body issues having mothers that agree with these thoughts. Maya Angelou is so right.
Hear, hear! Nothing wrong with dressing in an attractive but age appropriate way.
Definition of "shallow
Urban Dictionary
"judging a person based strictly on looks, not factoring in their personality whatsoever".
Hmmm?
Tremendous issues here. I'm very happy to see your article. Thanks so much and I am having a look ahead to touch you. Will you kindly drop me a mail?
Here is my weblog ford ranger forum
This is one of the most offensive blogs I have read to date and I am only 32. You have got to be horrible at guessing peoples ages. Who are YOU to decide that at age 50 a womans sex appeal no longer exists. Who are YOU to pass judgement on any woman for wearing something she feels sexy. Who are YOU for deciding that the 50+ woman is trying to impress YOU.
Okay why Anonymous did you look up how women over 50 should dress then if you are so offended by what I said? Makes no sense. And if you had any guts at all, you would leave your real name, not Anonymous! Shows how unintelligent people are today when they don't get that this post was done as a joke. What do I have to do write LOL all over it, or meant as a joke?
Yes, maybe you should have put a LOL after this. Your writing style isn't witty enough to indicate that this was meant as a joke.
It's not worth fighting with unarmed Idiots. Therefore I won't. This post that you all have been reading, has garnered 5,000 views. Who is the shallow person here? Just like all those people who say "I hate the Kardashians," but watch their TV shows, buy their stuff, and read about them on the Internet. You obviously are looking for something by looking this up, and reading it.
Yep, I found this blog by searching for "women over 50 wearing a bikini".....because I'm 54 and look fabulous still in mine, I'd like to know what other people are thinking. I had no idea people think like you! OMG totally insulting and I don't care how many "views" you've had. Your humor does not show as humor but as degrading and demented. I'm sorry you really do feel that way. I'll leave my name....no worries. I checked out your photo and I'm pretty sure you should stay away from a bikini or even just a beach at all. Maybe even public places....sexy you are not. OH just kidding KT1....LOL LOL
LOL - oh, yeah...you must approve all the comments....LOL
I am 53 and like Debbie found this site when searching over 50's wearing a bikini and while I can see where your coming from, I would say there are women of all ages who dress innapropriately for their size. I am slim (not skinny) have no bingo wings or cellulite and only slightly sagging boobs, I wear sleeveless tops and bikinis but blogs like this make me think I should dress like an old woman just because I'm over 50
Perhaps it's best if women of my age (54) cover ourselves from head to toe before leaving the house-or, even better, never leave the house at all! That way we won't be in danger of offending the young and beautiful with our horrifying imperfections.
I for one am glad for any help on age dressing. I haven't purchased a dress in years or worn one in at least 4 years. I would like to dress like a female once in awhile but not sure what to buy...size or style. The last dress I wore was a size 12 knee length. Along the subject I have a problem with what shoes too. hate pointed shoes.
I am 52 & I think the suggestions are very sensible.

Personally, I think much depends on the individual when it comes to what is or is not appropriate. For 45-55 was my best time. I could pass for 30ish, no flab, not a wrinkle and very energetic. Of course, I've always been somewhat conservative... no boobs hanging out, butt cheeks covered, but I wore my bikini and with slacks, no undies because I hate lines and thongs (ewwww... anal floss).
If one is overweight or have things that are better kept out of sight, do so. However, I think as long as it is attractive without being trashy, go with it. Some people think that women of a certain age should wear short hair... again... it depends on the individual and the style. We all want to be the best we can be, whether it be our outward image or our attitude. Be considerate. :)
I AM SORRY BUT I have seen a huge majority of woman over 50 that put as you state 'juniors' to shame in looks and body shape! I assume you are trying to be humorous, you failed big time. IF YOU WANT TO WRITE SOMETHING, do some research first, you are offensive and have not got a clue on fashion do or don't!
"Disgust" and hatred of old ladies. Haha, just wait until YOU get that age. If you do.
Who are you to judge what is "YUK"! Seems that you have low self esteem? I'm 58, and if I want to wear a bikini to catch a tan, the likes of you can say "yuk!" as often as you want, I wont care....By the way, what are you even looking at/for? "If you don't happen to like me, pass me by!" Live and let live.
I'm 50, weigh 126, am toned, healthy, size 4-6, and have to show my id to prove my age. I wear what I want and feel all women should wear what makes them confortable and happy. This post is unfeeling and rude. No one owes you beauty, and you should never assume an 'older' age automatically means fat, saggy, or any of the other 'vile' words you use to describe what it means to be 'old'. Good luck with your own aging process, honey, you're gonna need it with that shitty outlook and attitude. Karma is a bitch.
Go, hot mama, I agree!
Oh my I just had my 55 yr. old birthday. I've acted my age and am proper the way I dress and act, young and older. Mom was a great example over the yrs. Well my old high school sweet heart has found me and tells me how beautiful I am. I do dress my age and look great, just ask him.
Proud''
I am 55 I have 3 children 35, 32 , 18 . I weigh 115 5'1'' . I dress respectful . But sometimes I love the little dresses and I do not believe it is the clothes a person wears that makes them look bad at any age , it is how they carry themselves as an individual . Everyone wants to look nice and I feel let them dress how they feel best , We are all different , therefore we all will dress differently . Just Be Happy ,,regardless what others think ,,everyone talks no matter what you wear ,,so give them something to talk about
I totally agree with "Proud." I am sixty years old and can pass for forty. When I was forty, however, I looked forty. It's all in the attitude. So many women "give up' when they hit their forties. They stop taking care of themselves, wear 'I give up dresses," and lose interest in sex because they don't see themselves as sexy anymore. I got a new lease on my life in my fifties, lost some weight, started wearing clothes without being influenced by what I "should" be wearing at my age, and feel fabulous!
I feel your observations older women are completely insulting, biased and one sided. This "mother of the bride you mentioned must be the mother of your friend whose wedding you attended.
The wonderful news is you too will one day be "this mother of the bride" if you ever have the privilege of having a daughter.
I am a 50 year old attractive and sexy as I choose to be woman who has become more attractive as I age. My mom is 72 and looks like she is my age. I hope that will be me one day. That said, I see many younger women in their 20's and 30's who by your standards should absolutely stay out of bathing suits of any kind, sleeveless shirts, short skirts and yoga pants of all things. Looking great is not just something available in your youth. Sure, it takes effort but that's common sense. I love feeling the wisdom and genuine confidence afforded by maturity. in my 30's I thought I was all that. Ha. Looking back now I realize I did not have a clue. Love yourself and respect the sisterhood.
Thank you Anonymous, it sounds like Kt1 is a little jellous and has to put people down to make herself feel better....u feeling a little frumpy and dumpy these days Kt1 cuz your picture sure makes u look that way, we can see you standing there sucking in your gut....Btw Im 42 and still look like in 28-30 years old !!! Don't hate us cuz were Beautiful...and your writing sucks, u need to go back to school, try charm school this time, cuz you've missed the whole point of what it is to be a lady
